What a moving story about how you found the other unschooling homeschoolers in your town. I could feel very well with you because I know how hungry I have been for people with the same values as I began to crack out of that cage of normality and what I was supposed to do.

Good that you rambled on so long. I am looking forward to the other episodes.

In Germany homeschooling is illegal and school attendance is strictly enforced. But you can live an unschooling attitude nevertheless.

Hi Sarah,

Downloaded your podcast to my iPhone and listened to it Saturday on the plane ride from Austin to Phili (in Austin to spend the day on Friday with a realtor looking at houses). Just wanted to say thanks! Really enjoyed it. I especially like what you said about not taking any ones "theory" or "philosophy" or "approach" (I'm not sure of your exact words here...just paraphrasing) as the gospel. That one needs to grab pieces here and pieces there to fit their individual lifestyle. Without thinking about it I have always done this and it just creates such an awesome life! So while I may find some aspects of Radical Unschooling or LoA appealing, there may be some aspects I don't find appealing...I grab what I need...the concepts that feel right to me that I can use to build the life I want. I have a pretty interesting life with many interests and dreams. Taking things too seriously or living my life in too linear of a fashion would be boring and non authentic! Thanks for making me think more about LoA and other concepts.

Sarah, just finished listening to the show. It was just what I needed to hear right now! I am a pretty positive person most of the time, so I don't think I put off much negative energy, but I do think I sometimes get tunnel vision in my problem solving. I need to be more open and creative in the way I look at problems. We have decided to move to Nashville and we are now trying to figure out how we are going to afford to move and find a job and that sort of thing...You never know what can happen when you are open. Thanks!

I agree! That is one of my favorite parts of your podcast, your opening music selection.
Any chance you could go back and add your opening music artist to each podcast notes?? In your spare time? ha.

Hey Sarah! I JUST listened to this podcast! Last year I was having issues with my computer and it not wanting to play podcasts for some reason and then once that was all taken care of I just lost track of these podcasts. Then, they stopped being announced on your blog (clanofparents) and I thought you had stopped making them!

Long story short, I just discovered THIS blog tonight and have been trying to do some catching up. I want to say thank you SO much for the shout out and I hope you didn't think I was just being rude and not acknowledging that you said hi...

Thanks SO much again for shouting out to me and addressing my question/suggestion for a podcast. I thought it was AWESOME.

Hello,
Just wanted to say, I like the music. I don’t listen to the radio much and it has been a long time since I had a friend that introduced me to new music. With that said, your choices are poignant to the topic and inspiring. I have become a quick fan of your favorites. Please keep the music as part of your program.
Listening from KY,

I really enjoyed the show today! It is funny because my family has known we plan to homeschool since my daughter was born, but now that she is five I am starting to get all sorts of questions. My brother told me I was crazy and that from now on he was going to give my kids books for b-days and Christmas. Like kids only read books in school:-) We can't wait for the Rethinking Education Conference. It will be our first and we are so excited! I am hoping it will help give me more confidence when discussing unschooling with others. I don't doubt unschooling as a way for my kiddos to learn, but I am still a little self conscious when discussing it. Great show!

Hi Sarah. I just listened to your last three episodes (#11,12,13), which really resonated with my views on child psychology and libertarian principles. (I really, really liked your discussion in #12 on authenticity.)

On a pedagogical note, episodes 46-51 of my own Complete Liberty Podcast covered the ins and outs of governmental "education" as well as the brilliance of unschooling principles (I put some links to Kohn, Holt, et al., and Dayna Martin's great vids in the shownotes:).

In regard to School House Rock and "Bills," here's another informative take on the subject:
Pirates and Emperors - Schoolhouse Rock

I found your podcast via Relaxed Homeskool podcast via putting "homeschooling" into iTunes Podcasts. What a journey! It is so refreshing to hear words put to feelings and thoughts I've been developing. I'm a 27 yr. old mom of an 18 month old girl and to-be-born-in-May baby. I've known I wanted to homeschool since I was homeschooled myself for a couple of years in 7th and 8th grades, but I'm so glad that the concept of Unschooling/Life Learning/Radical Unschooling is now being discussed and I get to learn about it! I also love that between Relaxed Homeskool discussions and what I'm hearing you discuss, I'm getting the tools and language for the concepts of gentle parenting and attachment parenting.

While I've been reading about homeschooling vs. schooling, and even a bit about unschooling with John Holt and with Gatto, I grabbed a bunch of books at my library that primarily address schooling at home (which I knew I didn't want to do) just to see if there was anything of value. One of the books I hadn't cracked open yet was The Well-Trained Mind, which was highly recommended on Amazon. Then I listened to your assessment of it on your podcast as the driest book. So, I had to at least read the introduction! Wow, talk about putting emphasis on one type of learning! Logic, speaking well, analyzing information etc. are all important, but the implication in the book was that such skills are gained only through a careful and rigorous structure done for 12 years! Then, I watched Sir Ken Robinson on TED talk about how children need to learn to their strengths because for too long schools have emphasized the skills needed to be ... a college professor! ( I got the link for that talk from your blog, by the way).

Anyway, I sit in my living room spinning wool on my spinning wheel ( an interest that has come from my own unschooling, now that I'm all done with all the education I "should" have had, and now have time to pursue so many things I'm really interested in) and I'm listening to your podcast. Between that and the internet I've joined a huge community of people like me, and I've joined a discussion essentially about life and its purpose. What fun! Thank you so much for sharing what is on your mind, how you are living, and the ideas behind it all.

Thanks for the thoughts! I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that we see schools as this big complicated thing and think that our own teaching should be complicated as well. My kids are still pretty young (1 and 3), so I'm still easily sucked into the worry of meeting milestones. Before your last podcast (#9), my 3 year old had no interest in letters or words or sounds. Since then, he has exploded with interest in letters, sounds, and words. He now knows almost all his letters and some sounds. He even knows that letters make words. Seeing that explosion of interest and knowledge makes unschooling a lot more real for me.

Thanks for another thought provoking show. I love your podcasts. I never thought of myself as an unschooler, but I'm finding myself reconsidering more every day.

If you're taking suggestions for future topics, I'd love to hear about how you facilitate your children's learning. I know it should be basic, but I feel like it's much more natural for my husband than it is for me. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm a vote for no music. Love the info, but I listen to podcasts for the talk. I listen to music for music.

just found your podcast and wanted to thank you for sharing your family's journey into unschooling. as a mom (to a 2 year old) who decided to homeschool when our son was an infant, i too find the "race" for preschool ridiculous. so funny to hear your story because i find the same things about school and regimented homeschooling silly. looking forward to hearing more podcasts!
