I agree with you that the political process is very important, because it affects us. And what is very important to us inevitebly spills over to our kids. But I see the political process very different than you, maybe somewhat how you view the school system.
Living in Germany where homeschooling is forbidden and school attendance is (by a rewritten Nazi-law) strictly enforced, I discovered that the actions of government are always backed up by the threat of physical force. Governmental actions and laws are coercive rules, and once in effect it is about obeying them. So I see voting as begging a stranger that is not accountable to me to coerce society the way I like and not the way my neighbour might like.
From this perspective the political process is the opposite of unschooling and self-regulation. So I do not vote because I do not want to participate in such an immoral and destrcutive process.
How different things can be viewed, eh?
The fact that I am listening to this installment just now about a year after the "black prince entered the white house" affords us with the opportunity to look back at the excitement and sum up how well it has gone with the change. Americans (and children and grandchildren) have a lot more change to repay than before. That is what I would pick, but I am aware that others would pick other, more favorable accomplishments.
